10. University of Calcutta
Our list of the top ten most popular Indian universities is completed with the Calcutta University; that is placed 52nd in the BRICS ranking and 149th in Asia. The University of the Delhi and the Indian University of Calcutta are the multidisciplinary public universities in India. It is located in Kolkata, a city known as the profitable center of East India, with a GDP among the largest in southern Asia.
Founded in 1857, the Indian University of Calcutta now enrolls over 23,000 students across some campuses. Despite not featuring in the top rankings, the University of Calcutta claims the greatest research center of all Indian universities, which is dedicated to nano-science and nanotechnology.
9. Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati
IITs always comes in the mind when talking about the highly rated Indian universities. Once again the Indian Universities of Technology Guwahati gets along, ranked 50th in the BRICS ranking and 98th in Asia. It was founded in 1994 by the Indian government that is surrounded by the northern banks of the Brahmaputra River in the town of Guwahati, northeastern India.
Along with offering engineering, science and many other programs, the school also boasts six research centers with a focus on nanotechnology, energy, mass media communication, instructive technology, environment, and instruments facility. In the current years academic rankings, IIT Guwahati is among the top 300 schools global for electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.
8. University of Delhi
One of the some top rated universities in India, The University of Delhi is not focused on technical degrees; the University of Delhi is mostly referred as one of the best multidisciplinary schools in the countryside. Founded in 1922, it’s currently ranked 46th in the BRICS rankings and 91st in Asia. It has two different campuses in north and south in the city of Delhi. More than 300,000 students are getting the quality education in this famous Indian university. In extension to a full spectrum of degree programs, the school also runs five Centers of Advanced Studies in the fields of chemistry, sociology, geology, history and zoology. 7. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
Established in 1847 as a University of civil engineering, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee became an IIT in 2001. The Indian university is now ranked 43rd in the BRICS ranking and 92nd in Asia and has around 8,000 registered students. Situated in the town of Roorkee in Uttarakhand in northern India, IIT Roorkee concentrates on science and engineering programs as well as giving humanities, social sciences and management degrees.
IIT Roorkee boasts three ‘centers of excellence’, dedicated to nanotechnology, transportation systems and disaster mitigation and management. IIT Roorkee highlights in eight subjects in this year’s subject rankings; as you would assume, it does most excellent for engineering, science and technology disciplines.
6. Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur
Established in 1951 as a coaching institute for scientists and engineers, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has emerged as different from the leading technical universities in India. It was ranked 24th in the BRICS ranking and 67th in Asia. It is situated in the north-east India in the town of Kharagpur, 120 kilometers west of Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur boasts the biggest campus among the IITs, spanning over 2,000 acres. This popular institute is home to more than 8,000 students and has projects to ‘go green’ by 2020.
IIT Kharagpur is ranked internationally in 12 subjects, comprising a top-100 point for civil & structural engineering, mechanical engineering and materials sciences.
5. Indian Institute of Technology Madras
The next spot in top Ten Indian Universities is given to IIT Madras that was created in 1959. It currently holds 20th spot in the BRICS ranking and 56th in the overall of Asian universities. The school is situated in the city of Chennai, formerly Madras, one of the principal cities in southern India, on a campus of 600 acres land area.
With more than 8,000 students, IIT Madras boasts huge natural surroundings, adjacent to conservation site Guindy National Park. Among the nine subjects IIT, Madras is globally ranked for. Furthermore, it does best in engineering programs. IIT Madras is ranked among the world’s top 100 schools for civil & structural engineering, electrical & electronic engineering and mechanical engineering.
4. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was established just after One year after IIT Bombay began its doors. Hot on the heels of its somewhat older sibling; it’s given the 18th spot in the BRICS ranking and 58th in Asia. Situated in extensive grounds just outside of the city of Kanpur, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur enrolls more than 7,000 students.
Similar to most other IITs, it combines a primary focus on engineering and science subjects with a variety of courses in humanities and social sciences. Besides it also offers postgraduate degrees in business and management. IIT Kanpur is internationally ranked in ten subjects, including statistics, for which it is ranked among the top 100 schools worldwide.
3. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
Established as an engineering college in 1961, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has quickly established a place among the top universities in India. It holds 13th in the BRICS ranking this year and places 42nd in the whole of Asia. Situated in the south of the bustling city of New Delhi in the Hauz Khas neighborhood, IIT Delhi operates across a 325-acre campus close to some other research institutes and Indian universities.

Though mainly a technical institute, IIT Bombay gives some arts and humanities courses alongside its standard engineering and science subjects, and its three ‘Centers of Excellence’ include the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management.
It is known as one of the oldest Indian universities in India and was established in 1958. It is just positioned in the Powai neighborhood in the north-east of Mumbai and currently has around 8,000 students. Ranked globally in a whole of 13 subjects, IIT Bombay does top for art & design, civil & structural engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical & electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, material sciences and statistics.
1.Indian Institute of Science Bangalore
Winning the first spot in our ranking list of top 10 most popular Indian universities is not other than the Indian Institute of Technology Bangalore. It is the most famous public institution in India that claims to be India’s leading representative in the BRICS ranking, in fifth place. It also got 34th spot in the newest QS University Rankings: Asia, consistently listed among the top universities in India and well known for its research in the fields of technology and engineering. IISc Bangalore is situated amid the hub of research institutes just north of Bangalore city, the Indian Institute of Science offers a great academic network as well as 40 departments across the 400-acre residential campus.
